I agree real racing is 1/4 mile. However, with the cost of racing these days 1/8 mile does help keep some cost down for the average weekend racer. May not help much, but it's gotta help a little. It takes a lot less real estate to run a 1/8 mile track and it does help move the race along a little faster. Reply.

I use to race 1/4 mile back in Michigan. Down here in North Carolina it's all 1/8 mile racing. On the 1/4 mile track my stocker does 12 seconds flat if I am doing my job. As far as the 1/8 vs 1/4 mile racing, both are valid and each can favor different types of car configurations. Also cars are typically set up differently for 1/8th mile vs 1/4 mile racing. (trans gears, rear end gearing, etc.) Car weight can also make a difference as a very lightweight car will get off the line quicker than a heavier car that takes a bit to get moving.
