17" VS 18" rims...advantages/disadvantages??? | DSMtuners.com

18" wheels are usually heavier than 17"s. More importantly, they have higher moments of inertia, since the weight is farther out from center, so the car is slower to accelerate and brake. Plus, with today's stiff-sidewall DOT-R tires, there really isn't a handling advantage in terms of lateral grip.
17 vs 18 inch wheels - StangNet

18's will fill out the wheel wells more but the rubber for them is more expensive. 17's are also lighter and have less rotating mass when at the track.

The short answer is the larger wheel. There's a multitude of different aspects to handling and potentially cases where the 17" would have the advantage. Generally, the 18" wheel will have the edge except for situations where compliance is needed (like baja running).
Differences between 17" and 18" tires? | Veloster Forum

The difference is made up in the height of the tire. 215/45-17 vs 215/40-18. The 5mm less tire height with the 18" wheel could result in less impact flex, therefore a rougher ride. That's my logic, and I'm sticking to it, right or wrong. I'm sure there are experts that could expand on this or prove me wrong.

It comes down to more subjective measures, apparently. The smaller 17-inch tires represent the most comfortable ride thanks to the larger sidewall. The 18-inch tires create a bit more road noise,...
17" vs 18" Wheel Track Performance - FT86club.com
https://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=56504
1) Unsprung Mass: 17" wheels are typically lighter than 18" wheels, reducing unsprung mass. 2) Rotational Inertia: 17" wheels have less rotational inertia. In other words, they are easier to spin up compared to an 18" wheel with more metal as outward mass.
17 or 18" wheels - Pro-Touring.com

A 17" wheel and tire of the same width - all else being equal will be lighter and have more sidewall than an equivalent 18" offering. Of course the 18" will give more brake clearance and may have more tire choices, but 17" is in the sweet spot for 26" tires - 18" is close to optimal also. Paul Huryk President CTW Motorsports

Received 224 Likes on 137 Posts. 17" will probably give you more tires choices. Not so sure about the 18" reducing vehicle performance though. Generally speaking, the larger the wheel diameter (for light trucks), the less of a load the tires will be able to support. For example, if you put 22" rims with low profile tires on your truck, you won't be able to tow squat safely.

1, depending on the weight of the new wheel, you could actually lose performance/mpg's (if your new wheel is several pounds heavier) 2 - you could 'feel' the road more - the 18 has a lower profile tire on it, meaning that it won't absorb as much of the road bumps as your 17 would. That's about it really though.
