On May 13th, 1945, a crowd of 6,500 watched as racing RESUMED, after a two year absence, due to World War II, and never stopped, UNTIL August 7th, 1995. Then racing at Ak-Sar-Ben stopped forever. Most racing fans here in Nebraska are still saddened by the sudden demise of Ak-SAR-BEN.

All that's left is a plaque honoring Omaha, the horse. Ak-sar-ben was just Ak-sar-ben no race track or race course just the hyphens. It was a one mile thoroughbred track, located in Omaha about five miles from the center of town. It featured an open air grandstand as all of the racing was in late spring to mid summer.

The Ak-sar-ben race track, sometimes referred to as “Ak”, held races every year until 1995 (with the exception of 1930 and 1934, and then 1943 and 1944 while World War II was happening (Dorr, 1995). First electric starting gate in Midwest used. 06/01/1952 Six acres of parking and 2,000 seats added to facility.
