Aside from the one obvious issue (eventually resolved with additives that produce a visible flame), methanol is a safer racing fuel than gasoline. The flash point is higher so it's harder to ignite a spill. Spray enough water on an alcohol fire and it goes out. Do that with gasoline and it floats on top of the water and spreads faster.

Why do Indy cars run on ethanol as opposed to pump fuel …
https://www.quora.com/Why-do-Indy-cars-run-on-ethanol-as-opposed-to-pump-fuel-like-Formula-1-cars
Originally, Indy cars ran on Methanol (not ethanol) and chose to use so because it has a high natural octane number and in the event of a crash and fire, it can quickly be diluted with plain water to the point where it won't burn any more. Though as stated, any alcohol burns with a nearly invisible flame so that could present its own problems.
