4.10 to 4.56 gears or maybe 4.88? | Hot Rod Forum

My personal opinion: the 4.56 were better than the 4.88. If you just want to play on week-ends and bracket race go with 5.13 (absolutely useless on the street) unless you got lots of money for gas and tires.

Westland, MI. Apr 4, 2007. #2. I had 4.56s. They are fun around town, but you can forget racing unless you're on a full slick. I would roast 1st to 3rd almost every time, if I was shifting fast. First was soo short. I did get on the freeway a few times too. Not sure what RPM to speed it was, because I never got the speedo calibrated.

Doesn't look like much difference between the 2 at the 1/8th mile track and so the 4.56 gear would be a better choice. You never know after I run a few times at Onondaga I may grow a set and get the courage to take it to Milan.

Gears in the 1/4 mile are a trade off I think. The lower gears will giver you a better launch but will lose on the top end. The Higher might suffer off the line but will net you better on the big end. Just my thoughts. You need to find a good balance, I think 3.92/4.10 are just about right with some drag radials but 4.56 might be too much.

According to Cynthia Norris from US Gear, the application of how the gearset will be used is very important to know during the selection process. “If you are building a street car, you would need to choose an 8620 steel gear which will hold up under the consistent conditions of street use. Best drag racing gear ratio - The AMC Forum

10,482 fpm = 119 mph for 29" slicks, 5.14 gears, and 7100 rpm @ motor. So it comes out about the same as the above example. around 11.00 sec @ 120 mph and the ~7.5 lbs/HP at the tires. for 3400 lbs divide by 7.5 lbs/HP = 453 HP @ tires. then using 20% for drivetrain loss = 567 HP @ Motor.
