Art Cross (born 24 Jan 1918 Jersey City, New Jersey; died 15 Apr 2005 La Porte, Indiana). Worked as a heavy equipment operator for 20 years. Retired to run his farm with wife Margaret and raise their family, but sadly both died within a few weeks of each other in 2005. Cross retired from racing quite suddenly in 1955, whilst at his peak, and despite many requests, never did return.

Cross started racing Midgets in 1938, but his career was interrupted by World War II. During the war, Cross was awarded a Purple Heart after being a part of the Battle of the Bulge. Returning to racing after the war, Cross ran in four Indianapolis 500s and was the first recipient of the Indy 500 Rookie of the Year award in 1952.
