Augusta International Raceway enjoyed a spectacular but brief heyday from 1963 to 1969, never quite fulfilling its potential before falling into disuse and decay. Despite this, much of the original layout remains, with part incorporated into a new public park and recreation ground, helping keep its sporting heritage alive.

The NASCAR "Augusta 510" was run for the first time on the three mile road race circuit in November of 1963, Six of the top seven finishers would not survive to start the next NASCAR season, The sole survivor was Ned Jarrett. Glenn " Fireball " Roberts wins the 1963 Augusta 510 only to loose his life in a crash in 1964.

The "Augusta 510" was run on November 17, 1963 at the road circuit with a noon start time and a 5:00 PM end time. The race actually covered 417 miles (671 km) because of the time limit. This event was the second race of the 1964 season for the Grand National Division of NASCAR which was later to become the Winston Cup Division and then Nextel Cup.

In 1956, they built Overnite Race Track, also on in the suburb of Martinez. Across the river in Aiken, South Carolina, off a road aptly named Whiskey Road, a d-shaped half-mile ran in the mid-fifties. Augusta International Speedway opened in the early sixties. This was a very ambitious project that included a drag strip and a road course.
