Ray Shadow The Ray Shadow button enables the light source to generate ray-traced shadows. When the Ray Shadow button is selected, another set of options is made available, those options being: Shadow sample generator type. Method for generating shadow samples: Adaptive QMC is fastest, Constant QMC is less noisy but slower.

Area Ray-Traced Shadows — Blender Manual

Area Ray-Traced Shadows — Blender Manual Area Ray-Traced Shadows ¶ Adaptive QMC settings. The Area light source can only cast ray-traced shadows. The ray-traced shadows settings of this lamp are mostly shared with other lamps, as described in Ray-traced Properties . However, there are some specifics with this lamp, which are detailed below:

Introduction — Blender Manual

Ray-traced shadows require more computation than buffered shadows but produce sharp shadow borders with very little memory resource usage. To enable ray-traced shadows, three actions are required: Enable Shadows globally in the Render menu’s Shading panel. Enable Ray tracing globally from the same panel.

Shadows — Blender Manual

What is a shadow ray? - Blender Stack Exchange

I have read the Blender documentation wikis on both the light path node and on light paths. But neither of them seems to clearly explain what a shadow ray is. For instance, the light paths wiki says: Shadow: the ray is used for (transparent) shadows. It then shows a diagram with the ray labeled “shadow” going (backwards) from a surface to a light source.

⚓ T31776 triangle artifacts with raytraced shadows - Blender

    https://developer.blender.org/T31776
I found that it occurs with any kind of raytraced shadow light, though it's most obvious with area. I tried applying the modifiers, but that didn't help. I tried changing the terrain material to be very basic instead of using nodes. I tried changing raytrace shadow settings, but could not get rid of it. It occurs the same on version 2.62.

With ray-tracing, all Blender lights can cast shadows if you desire. Ray tracing can produce some stunning effect, but can come at a high cost in rendering times. Use it only where needed. Don’t try to ray-trace everything. The professionals don’t even do that. Watch any 3D show on T.V. and you will see it being used selectively. You can get some great shadow and texture effects with …
