However, if 44-16 is the "standard reference" for kids I try to shorten that up a bit, especially when they are running taller wheels like 1-3/8" (are about an 1" taller than standard 20's). Together with a short crank arm, the kids are working harder than the big boys. For my 12 year old I went with 165/20x1-3/8/43-17.
