Bracing Connections involve the bolting of flat, angle, channel, I-section, and hollow section members to a gusset plate to support the column or other members. The bracing member in a bracing connection can work in tension alone, or in both tension and compression and stabilize the main components by distributing the loads.

Bracing Connections Bracing members often include hollow sections such as SHS, RHS or CHS. They are often designed assuming the bracing member is subject to only tension, though some include for both tension and compression.

Design the bracing connection of Fig. 5.63 for the factored loads shown. The column is to be made of grade 50 steel and other steel components of A36 steel. This connection comprises four connection interfaces: diagonal brace to gusset plate, gusset plate to column, gusset plate to beam, and beam to column. Use the AISC LRFD specification.

It is actually a horizontal tube brace into a vertical column. The gusset and knife plate are both horizontal and these are connected to each other with an additional plate top and bottom and 6 bolts into each section. There are 4 plates involved. I have attached a really crude sketch. csd72 (Structural) (OP) 11 Apr 08 10:34

Bracing connections (Gusset plates). Simple connections can also be needed for skewed joints, beams eccentric to columns and connection to column webs. These are classed as special connections and are treated separately. [ top] Design procedures The design of simple connections is based on BS EN 1993-1-8 and its accompanying National Annex.

Check the plate gross cross section for tension and compression (buckling). The setback is very small, so buckling should be OK. Design the field welds for the HSS to gusset (4 fillet welds, minimum length equal to the HSS width). Check shear in the gusset plate along the welds. Check the net section of the HSS, and remember shear lag.
