With a 3 speed box the first gear has to be low enough to allow starting in all conditions and the top gear has to be high enough to prevent overrevving so with only 3 gears they have to be widely spaced out. I was aware of a mod used by those that Trail ride bantams that involved using a Bultaco or Yamaha basket. But no amount of Googling would return any results.
