A real Christmas tree is probably going to be a lot trickier to build than just chaser lights. I saw one a couple of years ago for go cart drag racing that used a PC connected to the tree via the printer port. This is probably the way I would go. Solid state relays to drive the lights, infr-red photo transistors for the stage sensors.
