Carmack on Ray Tracing & Rasterization | Beyond3D Forum
https://forum.beyond3d.com/threads/carmack-on-ray-tracing-rasterization.53569/
Rasterization is a tiny part of the work that a GPU does. The texture sampling, shader program invocation, blending, etc, would all have to be duplicated on a ray tracing part as well. Primary ray tracing can give an overdraw factor of 1.0, but hierarchical depth buffers in rasterization based systems already deliver very good overdraw ...

Allow me to toss in my 2 cents:I have been working on real-time ray tracing for several years now, and currently, I am trying to get students (I'm a lecturer) to use it in small games that we develop as part of the course (IGAD, NHTV, Breda, The Netherlands). You can check out my work at http:/

Here is a question that was directed at Carmack recently at Quakecon 2002 (source: Tom's Hardware Guide): Q - What about hardware based ray tracing? A - Well, it might be right for some specific markets, but it isn't something for the gamer market. I find it interesting that Carmack is...
John Carmack's Comment on Hardware Ray Tracing

Excellent response by Carmack. "Ray Tracing" has always been an overhyped or misunderstood technology, at least in my experience. Because of the impressive lighting effects it's famous for producing, people view it as some "holy grail" of superior computer graphics technology that we just need to optimize a bit for use in games.
