Castrol R was the racing engine oil of choice during the 60s, 70s and into the 80s. Anybody who went to bike races or hot rods will know exactly what I am talking about.

Racers used "R" as the main lubricant but it can sludge an engine up. It was only recommended for use when racing engines were stripped down regularly to replace rings and be overhauled due to the normal than usual wear caused under racing conditions and if left in an unused motor for any considerable length of time it would sludge. Ahhh yessss, brings back fond memories, ran many a moto cross bike on good old Castrol R, always had to give the bike a bloody good shake just to mix the fuel and oil together before trying to start them otherwise the oil used to settle in the bottom of the tank and the float bowls and would be a complete nightmare to start.
