I've watched controller racers be completely fine during the beginning of a race, but once your tires wear down you're toast. You need the small adjustments and feel of grip that only a wheel is gonna give you. That will map your controller to 60 deg and make everything much less sensitive. You can change that number at any time by opening the settings tab in the sim and adjusting the top slider (wheel angle). So if you find this is too sensitive or not enough, you can tweak it a bit. The dead zone is annoying, but you don't really want one.
