He went back through his catalog of the 1985 Columbus Ohio IMSA Champion Spark Plug Challenge race, and came up with this shot of the #04 Portland Racing entered GTI, driven by David Rugh. David finished 5th, and in this shot we can clearly see a number of similarities between our VW Sport Caravan GTI and those they ran on the track.

The second fastest qualifier in GT3 was David Rugh driving a Volkswagen Scirocco. He was the North Pacific champion taking the division by one point over 1983 National Champion Mike Rickman. Rugh gave pole-sitter Rickman all he could handle for the first 8-laps but he faded finishing twenty-second.

In 2004 the Corrado raced in the SCCA National Runoffs at Mid-Ohio and despite qualifying 11th, David Rugh was able to finish the race on the podium in 3rd place. Despite being 10 years from its championship form, the car was extremely competitive in the GT3 class racing against many newer race cars including the dominant Nissan’s of the era.
