Im pretty sure that the 31 spline axles for small bearing housings are the same as any other 31 spline axle they use a conversion bearing to make it fit. basically you do loose a little bearing strenght but not axle strenght but as was said if you stick with the small stuff well your kinda stuck with staying with it or buying new stuff again to upgrade brakes.

If you go with 31 splines you can use a clutch type limited slip or the Truetrac, along with a Detroit Locker or spool. What will you be doing with the car? If it's just a street car then 31 splines will be fine. If it's also a serious drag car then you might need to go with 35 splines. I've got an old Detroit Locker in my car from a '69 Mustang.

31 splines are much stronger, but with the prices now from Moser, Currie, and some of the others for good axles and how cheap spools are, I suggest to use them instead. If this is street then the price of the limited slip will not be cheap but still will be needed.
