The long and short of it is, no, the sway bar isn't required on a drag car, but would be a necessary item on a road racer. Not all cars in the 60's or eariler came with sway bars. Most of the Ford 6 cylinder cars for sure didn't.

Sway bars are an interesting piece as they can be used, or abused, for optimizing cornering or drag launches.
