He'd continue this practice through 1972, but in 1973 he parked the top fuel dragster to focus exclusively on racing funny cars. It was the right decision, and in 1973 earned his fourth victory at the U.S. Nationals.

Prudhomme scored a number of firsts in drag racing. He became the first driver to win four consecutive NHRA Winston Series titles (1975-1978) and he won the U.S. Nationals seven times. In 1982, he became the first Funny Car driver to break the 250 mph barrier and in 1989, he was the first to post a Funny Car run of less than 5.20 seconds.
