Once 2nd engages and overdrives 1st gear, the 1st gear dogs try to back drive. Since the back sides of the dogs have ramps, the ramps just kick the 1st gear selector out of engagement. It works great for drag racing, but would be totally useless in a road race. The transmission would pop into neutral every time you lifted off the throttle.
