You cannot compare the viscosity of gear oil to that of engine oil. Engine oil's viscosity is measured at 210ºF, gear oil is measured at a lot lower temp. A thinner oil will help free up hp. I have seen 75W-90 gear oil, although most of that is synthetic. It will be superior than dino oil. If you want to go cheap, go to your Toyota dealer with an oil jug and buy some dino 75W-90.
