It is dying. Not just Drag racing, other forms as well. When you take the manufacture out of it, there is nothing left to root for. What made racing great back in the day, if you had a skill set, you could field a competitive car in most classes. It still took money, but nothing like it does today. People like to see heads up racing.

Drag racing, bracket racing in particular, can be done with anything that can go down the track. The win light is just as exciting in a slow car as it is in a fast car, actually better if a fast car was in the other lane. speedtigger Registered Joined Nov 5, 2010 4,135 Posts #12 · Aug 18, 2013 Eman85 said:

IMHO, drag racing is FAR from dead. In fact, I predict we'll see solid crowds and participation as the season goes on. The season-opening event at Fontana shouldn't be used as a barometer. If you look at the history of the NHRA in the 50s and 60s, we …
Drag Racing is Getting Boring | Hemmings

Sponsorship support of drag racing has been in decline for a while now, but there's more to it than that. Individuals who could well afford to field cars out of their own pockets are increasingly less inclined to do so, and that's resulted in NHRA national event fields of 16 cars becoming just that--16 cars, and only 16.

If you think drag racing is a dying sport just come to California. If anything is still good in California its that we still have tracks to race on. In fact the AAA drag strip just re-opened in Fontana. Once a month is street class racing. $20, closed exhaust, no leaks and no sub-10 second cars. And is a 1/4 mile.
Where Are All the New Drag Racing Fans in the NHRA?

One of the main reasons we’re finding out for loss of additional corporate involvement is NHRA’s TV ratings. In the business, it’s all about the number of faces you get your product in front of and lately with other sports surging, drag racing is suffering miserably. Look at this week’s NFL Super Bowl. A 30-second ad is valued at $4.5 million.
The Plain Truth: Auto Racing for the most part is losing fans

Dale Earnhardt would be 58 now and would probably not find much to like about stock-car racing. His death on Feb. 18, 2001, in a last-lap accident at the Daytona 500, led Nascar, and motorsports to a larger degree, into developments Earnhardt might have bristled at.
