This ratio is normally more than 1, except in overdrive gear. So, calling R the "gear ratio", your final answer is: V (mph) = D (in) ´ F (rpm) ´ (π/1056) / R. or, approximately: V = (D ´ F) / (336 ´ R) where V is the velocity (in mph), D the tire diameter (in inches), F the engine rpm, and R the gear ratio.

The GTO is a little better set up with a 3.46 rear and a little smaller tires. I see you have the 4.10 rear, so not a problem for you. But, if you had the factory 3.42 rear and close to stock HP, you'd be doing the 3-4 shift right at the speed trap. I'm guessing you go through the traps in 4th with your setup, right? generally 3.73 or higher is too much gear for cruising unless you have overdrive. 3.42 or 3.55 are fun and 3.23 is a good compromise. Almost any ratio could be obtained in the early 70s until converters came in and emissions made gearing changes.

For this example, lets say the smaller one is a 3.46:1 and the bigger sprocket is a 3.91:1 like is offered for our GTO’s now. Applying the same level of power from your LS1, from dead stop racing (such as drag racing), your engine is able to apply a greater level of leverage to accelerate, therefore making it quicker.
