In a 3 speed automatic you can usually only choose 1st and 2nd gear ratio, often they are locked together (cant mix and match) so you need to balance starting line ratio with shift drop rpm. In my experience engines with larger power curves are less sensitive to the 1-2 drop then narrow power band pieces.

Those are basic guide line numbers to start with on SLR. Many variables as mentioned. 1/8 mile or 1/4 mile. HP of the engine, weight, tire size (width and height), radial , slick A racer , I have been working on his powerglide, runs a 1.69 first gear in the glide. 3.70 rear end gear. Tire size I do not know, it is a big drag slick. SLR is around 6.25

Car is a 3100lbs 80 Camaro stock suspension on 275PRO with a sbc (around 670hp at the crank) and spraying 300-350hp of nitrous with a Sledgehammer. Presently I have a TH400 with a 2.10/1.40 gear set and 3.70 rear gears.
