Discussion Starter · #1 · Oct 14, 2007 Hey guys, I put on my F1 Racing Stage 2 clutch and flywheel and finally have a good 1100 miles on it now so I finally got into for a little. Doing different rolls, out the hole some, turns, etc. It is so much better than stock, it hooks up really nice and the shifts are so much smoother.

Now onto the single mass flywheel from F1 racing. The flywheel is their own design and weights in at 16lbs vs the dual mass at 24lbs. The flywheel includes replacement bolts for bolting the flywheel to the crank. They are 10.9 harden bolts. Enjoy my initial findings and reviews of this clutch.

Current Formula One engines do not have any kind of flywheel since it's not really necessary, and even more would hinder acceleration. Energy would be needed to accelerate the flywheel as well, where that can better be used to get the car at higher speeds. The 10 cylinder configuration also justifies this. We already got an evenly rotating motion.

Flywheel is a spinning mass, it's function is to smooth out the power delivery. Twice per rotation of the crankshaft, each piston has a "dead spot". The top most position and at the bottom position we have a moment where the piston can't move until the crankshaft has rotated a bit. So we need inertia to keep things moving in the right direction.

Since it is light, there will be less engine rotation mass so the car will accelerate quicker. It is lighter than chromoly, a heavy hard material. The racing flywheel is lighter giving it a lower inertia. In essence this means the engine will drop more rpms when starting off. It also means less mass in the drivetrain allowing for better acceleration. I'm not sure how msc models it but irl it shouldn't effect the top speed by much. I'm sure the carbs do more for speed.
