This is a scan from one of my dad's albums. It reads, "Freddy Hawes, Jackson -- July, 1936". Fred was a local driver, originally from Adrian, Michigan. A clipping supplied by reader Jeff Adams notes that Fred finished second to Mike Salay in the 40-lap feature on May 10, 1936. The caption on this one says simply, "Salay Russo, Jackson, July 18-37.

Rebuilt on a new frame and presumably the car that Walkinshaw raced at Thruxton in November, his first race since the Thruxton accident. Almost certainly the car sold to Fred Ashplant (Wayne, NJ) and raced in SCCA Formula C in 1971, fitted with a 1000cc Lucas engine.

The world has come a long way since Mr. Flournoy, was drag racing. At 70, he still builds cars and engines in the Los Angeles area and is a noted expert at running nitro Funny Cars. Mr. Flournoy drag race from 1959 to 1976. He set association and national records for elapsed time and held the Palmdale track record for five years from 1968 to 1973.

Frank also had a pair of big cars in the 40's and had Eddie Zalucki, Sr. for a teammate for a time. He became a strong runner with IMCA after WWII, with races at Jackson, Owosso, South Bend, etc. When IMCA was not scheduled, he raced the Black Lawrence Jewell HAL and then in 1948 had his own Offy, the famous "Black Panther."
