Gil and Iola owned and operated the business, later known as Gil Haugan Construction, for 40 years before retiring in 2000. In retirement, the couple enjoyed spending time at their place in Lead, SD. A member of the Huset's Speedway Hall of Fame, Gil began racing in 1955. He continued racing until 1964, winning many championships along the way.
