In the early 70's I personally built and used my own engine with a nodular iron GM 442 crank in an NHRA Super Stock Camaro at around 490 horsepower and it got RPM'ed to 7,800 RPM often, (back then the crank had to match the engine with no aftermarket or OEM steel crankshafts allowed, stock OEM rods, too).

Nodular iron is a slightly improved cast iron with a tensile strength of around 95,000 psi, but because of slightly higher carbon content, nodular iron has nearly twice the elongation characteristics of standard cast iron. Crankshafts will actually flex and bend, so greater elongation properties will give the nodular iron crank increased fatigue resistance.

Scat 9000 is cast steel, GM is cast iron. Big difference. Unless you are racing every week, a cast GM crank would be fine for 90% of you IMHO. The trouble is, it's cheaper to buy a new crank than turn a used crank. My internal balance Scat 9000 was $209 delivered to my door. Hard to beat for a street engine deal. Dec 9, 2010.

The higher the crankshaft is stressed the better the material you want it made from. Nodular steel is basically a cast iron crank, the 'steel' means it has some additional strength from a slightly higher carbon content. For a street motor putting out less than 400 HP and kept below 6000rpm it will work just fine.
