Methanol is cheaper, makes more power and torque, and is easier to find. Both require compatible hoses, pumps, fittings, carbs, fuel cells, etc. If you feel the need to run E-85, you can blend your own by adding 87 octane street gas to Ethanol. It will be just as precise as the already mixed pump version. Mike Croley Save Reply I Igots2race

we mix our own "RACE E-85"....thats actual RACE BLEND. In a 55 gallon barrel we put 46.75 gallons of E-98 ETHANOL. (purest form you can buy) and then add 8.25 gallons of 112 race fuel......this gives us our "RACE E-85" not sure of the octane, but it sure does work good. What application do you use this fuel mix on?
Mixing E85 With Pump Gas: Getting Higher Octane For …

In California, our overpriced pump premium sells for roughly $3.60 per gallon while E85 sells for $2.20. Blend those two together to create a 50-50 mix and you get 3.60 + 2.20 / 2 = $2.90 per gallon. What we’ve just created is a 96-octane fuel that costs less than 91-octane ($2.90 vs $3.60). That saves $14 for 20 gallons of fuel. Is there a catch?

So you can continue to blend them for your own desired purpose.” Let’s say, for example, that your fuel system can handle some ethanol but can’t deliver enough to support E85–like, maybe E40 sounds like the right concentration. E85's cooling effect equals lower inlet temperatures, this added with its greater knock resistance allows racers to creep up boost levels higher than traditional gasoline blends. An SME built 540ci block-Chevy strapped with an F3-139 ProCharger cranked out 2,500 horsepower at 30 psi on E85. Let that sink in for a minute.

LEAN OUT METHANOL FUEL SETUP TO RUN E85 The conversion from methanol to E85 requires leaning out the engine about 35-50% from the methanol mixture setup. E85 contains less oxygen to support combustion than methanol. That changes the air to fuel ratio. In addition, converting to E85 from gasoline requires enrichment of about 20-30%.

Posts: 7,069. Race fuel will make more power then E85. You can run more timing, the fuel system requires less attention and on Mike Swansons Camaro (gen6mike) the most his would make on E was upper 850s and made low 890s on Vp 109. He also has the Lingenfelter Pump and injectors, you know how much that cost.

E85 is technically any concentration between 51 percent and 83 percent ethanol, depending on the season and the part of the country where it’s sold. Because ethanol has less energy content than pure gasoline, drivers might see anywhere from a 15 to 35 percent dropoff in mpg using E85 compared with E10.
