The controller setup part is a one time thing... once setup, it should save those settings permanently. and one AWESOME feature of this game... is the ability to play 4 player split screen online! So you can have 2 computers with 4 racers each, and then a 3rd with 2... totaling 10 racers. All playing together!

^^ Its better than Mario Kart's online split-screen because you can do 5 player split-screen and take everybody on your console online. But not just online but pretty much every mode can be played multiplayer: World Tour, Grand Prix, All Online Race modes, Single Race and the offline Battle Modes.

The configuration menu definately shows player one and player two configured with x-box controllers. Player two is just not recognised. Sonic &SEGA All Stars Racing game works ok with 2 players. The second player is prompted to join, accept/A is pressed and it works.
