It's seperate from the game. You have to add the other controller as second player. After, launch the game. In the main menu, press start on the second controller. I perfer to use "Single race", which is located in carreer mode, since its easier to pick levels, but if you want to play capture the chao or other battle races, you go to local mulitplayer.

The game has some drop frames, but it never occured for it to crash. Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed is for sure super fun. My only concern with it are the tiny item boxes, sometimes they´re hard to tell when playing split screen and it can be a little hard to get them when drifting. Still, it is blast to play.,

The main "campaign" mode and grand prix modes can be played with four players as well. Not only that but you can take four player split screen online and race against other human players with your buddies on the same screen.
