Basic Rules of the Iditarod. Mushers must take one 24-hour stop and two 8-hour stops. Mushers can choose where they take the 24-hour stop, but they must take one 8-hour stop at the White Mountian checkpoint and the other 8-hour stop at the Yukon checkpoint. Iditarod has 40 hours of required rest. Rule #13 has been amended for the 2021 race and explains WHERE teams must rest? On the traditional route, a team must take a 24-hour rest and two 8-hour rests. The same will be true for the Gold Trail Loop. Rest regulations for the 2021 race are easier to understand when using traditional race terminology.
