    An "in-and-out box" is simply a mechanical coupler - used exclusively in clutchless cars (midgets, sprinters, etc). Those are direct drive racers and the "box" serves simply to allow disengagement of the drive train (while the motor is stopped), so they can be moved around. Once the cars are ready to be push started, the box is engaged.
