When ATVers decide to use IRS for racing then I propose to build a brand new four-wheel independent suspension (FWIS) quad. It can have 10-14" of travel depending on the type of racing. It will have improved ride qualities on rough tracks by 'raking' all four shocks, or leaning the top of the shocks to the rear at about 5-10 degrees from vertical.

Only show this user. One of my winter to-do lists is to install quad shocks on my IRS. I have enough wheel hop that I want to see if they will help smooth it out. I see Breeze has them, but they're 80 skins a piece. Anyone got any other options. FFR recommends them for 350hp+ and I'm pushing 500+. Howard. Dart 427W, IRS,T56 6 speed, POM Sept 2010.

Shocks resist force in proportion to suspension velocity, which peaks somewhere between the other two effects. It's really easy to build anti-squat into most stick-axle suspension arrangements by simply relocating a few linkage pivot points. This approach isn't as applicable to most IRS designs for a couple of reasons.

The IRS is still a far superior suspension component over the archaic four link stick axle and you should allow the IRS to prove itself before you throw in the towel on it. IRS differences through the years. In 1999 the halfshafts on the IRS contained a 28 spline inner shaft. This is determined by the gear carrier inside the differential.

It’s also very tolerant of rear ride-height changes ( IRS is extremely sensitive in comparison) due to the stable fore/aft instant center location. If you drive on bumpy surfaces, it’s usually better to reduce anti-squat since it will let the suspension move more, allowing for more tuning and engagement of the shocks and springs.
