This happens from a dead stop (medium to hard acceleration) and when cruising as I hit the throttle. I have a Mallory Unilite Comp 9000 distributor ( mechanical / breaker- less) in a 350 Chevy motor (8.5/1 compression,a mild performance cam, headers, air gap manifold, 670 Holley). It has been suggested that a distributor with vacuum advance (HEI) would eliminate …

At part-throttle cruise, the mixture is leaner so burns slower and cylinder pressure is less, so the vacuum diaphragm uses manifold vacuum to add extra spark advance for better fuel economy. If your carb is too small, at high RPM your engine may be developing some intake vacuum even at full throttle, which could add too much timing and cause detonation, so …

Generally speaking, vacuum advance (in conjunction with mechanical advance) will add 4-6 MPG at cruising speed as well as reducing engine temps at idle/low engine speeds. One reason it usually isn't seen on race motors (besides the fact that it doesn't operate at WOT) is at high RPMs, the movable points plate can introduce spark scatter/timing errors.

Motor idles @ 750 somthin with 16-17 inches of vacuum. You'll probabably be close to that depending on comp & heads. Save.

So based on this, you can see that having a curve in the distributor along with vacuum advance is a good thing as it reduces low-speed timing where the engine might detonate with too much timing but it can also benefit from more timing at part throttle than what is required at wide open throttle.
