Motz’s 1998 Kenworth conventional uses a J79 engine developed by General Electric for use in the F4 Phantom fighter jet to push the 7,000 pound truck to speeds exceeding 200 miles per hour. It has been the first and fastest of its breed to virtually every performance plateau for four decades. It’s been his livelihood, but it also almost killed him.

The truck has three Westinghouse J34-48 jet engines, with a total output of 36,000 horsepower, which allows the truck to complete the quarter-mile in 6.63 seconds. Shockwave is currently being driven by Chris Darnell, who uses the truck to compete against planes going 300 miles per hour (480 km/h) in a rolling drag race at airshows, often winning.
