Jim Pagel, 42, died at about 1 a.m. after surgery at Theda Clark Regional Medical Center, hospital officials said. Pagel was taken unconscious from the track after his race car hit a wall at a turn during qualifying trials. Pagel crew member Ken DeJardin said Pagel was slumped over as rescuers ran to the car.
