John started his racing career at age 15 when he joined the crew of the legendary Pappy Hough team. When long-time owner John Wergland chose Red to pilot his 1965 USAC sprint car entry, Riegel made the most of the opportunity, scoring four wins in seventeen races at New Bremen, OH on 5-2, Reading on 6-19, Eldora, OH on 6-3, and the Allentown, PA Fairgrounds on Wednesday, August 11, for a ninth place finish in the '65 USAC sprint car standings.

John owned sprint cars from 60 thru 74. John also lost a great drivers in Red Reigel and Bobby Marvin. John also had a young Mario Andretti drive for him in Allentown PA back in 63. My father “Mr Hudson” also lost his hero Marshall Teague at an early age. Thanks for making everyone aware of the hero’s that perished in the the fast lane.

First raced by Wergland (Ed Terry driving) in URC in 1961. I asked John Wergland in 1961 if Diz had seen the painted car. He said that Diz had looked at it in Tampa with his hands on his hips, then said only, "Paint don't win races!"
