About the Johnson company: The Johnson motor got it's name from four Terre Haute, Indiana, brothers, Lou, Harry, Julius and Clarence. They built a small inboard marine engine to power their rowboat up the Wabash River to their favorite walnut gathering spot. They also constructed a 2-cycle airplane engine which enabled them to make America's first monoplane flight.

The OMC 15A is the racing version of the popular 15 HP fishing motor. It uses the same power head with a special direct drive lower unit coupled to a short mid-housing with above the water exhaust. In JSH and JSR classes, a restrictor plate is placed behind the carburetor to limit its speed to about 35 MPH for the youngsters.

1931 Johnson XR-55 Racer When OMC introduced their Model 178 “Four-Sixty” in 1930, it had no serious competition and consequently was very successful in class “F” outboard racing. Johnson’s largest motor was the 40 cubic inch VR-50 but it wasn’t a viable competitor because of its displacement disadvantage.

Very few folks know how, but the answer is YES! The answer is a gigantic “YES” when dealing with the 2.7 – 3.3 liter “looper” family of engines. Dave Bush racing can (and will) work on anything outboard related. As it stands right now, I don’t know of any group that is making more power out of the looper OMCs.
