    Dr. Kasha's ideas don't really apply to archtop instruments like they do to flat tops. Arched tops are their own structure, so to speak. They don't really need braces as such, especially F-hole mandolins. The tone bars or "X-braces" are a means of controlling plate modes more than to support the top.

    Kasha's bracing was pretty out there when it appeared on the scene. To my knowledge its benefits were not 100% proven and Kasha had problems getting it accepted by mainstream luthiers.
