Newman was the first to win two Miracle Miles – Halwes (1968) and Friendly Footman (1981) – and drove 533 winners at Harold Park during his illustrious career. He retired from the driving ranks in 1986 and was awarded an OAM just five years later, while he was subsequently anointed as a living legend by Harness Racing NSW in 2000.
