The first guitars that I have ever built were ladder braced, based on the design developed by JG Scherzer in early 1800s and voiced with the help of Sergei Sergeev – a very talented Russian 7-string luthier. A lovely video of Rob MacKillop playing one of these guitars can be found in the “Recordings” section.

The Ladder bracing is mounted on the soundboard of the instrument in parallel with 3 or 4 or 5 sound beams. Ladder, X and Fan bracing were the only bracing patterns for guitar tops that I was aware of until recently. But in researching classical guitars I discovered a wide range of construction designs used to effect tone and reinforce the strength of guitar tops. Guitar players, myself included, usually don’t care much about how a guitar is built.

The X-bracing gives a more fundamental tone, the tonal development in the sound from a ladder bracing is more complex and lively.
