Builds first aircraft engine. The Lycoming factory developed its first aircraft engine: the R-680 nine-cylinder radial. On April 3, 1929, a Beech-designed TravelAir biplane was the first aircraft to feature the R-680 on successful trial flights. The engine powered the nation's earliest airlines. In over 20 years almost 25,000 R-680s were produced.

One of Mr Watson's achievements was his Lycoming Special open-cockpit racing sports car. It is in the museum until after Easter, on loan from Dunedin engineer Ralph Smith. The car has a low-revving 4733cc Lycoming aeroplane engine and a gearbox installed back-to-front in order to achieve overdrive.

The Lycoming V8 design layout is curiously similer to the Oakland V8 about 10 years earlier. I recognize your photo from the Auburn-Cord Museum "engine room". I was more facinated by that huge 55 liter experimental Deusenburg aircraft engine in the background. It put out 800hp in the 1930's.
