The course was built by the Manawatu Car Club on land on the outskirts of the town of Feilding, opening in October 1973. Finances were raised by the members (several took mortgages on their homes) and a $130,000 bank loan, as well as other fundraising drives.

Manfeild stadium was opened in 2007 and is a landmark single-span building. The renaming of the 3km international race circuit to Circuit Chris Amon, after the kiwi racing legend Chris Amon took place in November 2016. The design of this superfast layout was overseen by famous Ferrari-associated racer Chris Amon, who grew up locally.
