I am currently building a rosewood D-35 from a kit supplied by Martin. It has the 1/4 inch bracing. The instructions warn of scalloping the braces as they are not as strong and might cause some bellying with heavier strings. Light gauge strings came with the kit. I scalloped the tone bars but left the x-brace alone.
