Modified hybrid X scalloped bracing - The Unofficial Martin Guitar …

Its bracing pattern (modified hybrid x scalloped) is likely the main reason for its big sound. Could it be that the shorter scalloped bracing results in the braces being even lighter in weight than on standard scalloped braces? And might this result in more effective vibration of the top and so a bigger response?

There's no popsicle on either the hybrid or the A-frame. That tall brace is the soundhole brace. On the standard, you can see the popsicle just north of the soundhole brace.

X Bracing is used on all of Martin's guitars that feature hand cut dovetail neck joints. X bracing gets its name from the prominent 'X' formed by the two cross braces just below the soundhole of the guitar. Around this X you'll find 6 Tone Bars, two on each side of the X and two much larger ones below it.

First of all, the Hybrid A-frame bracing was started on the 16 series Martins, which are their "experimental...trying out new methods" model. The non-hybrid A-frame bracing was started on the D-1 model originally I believe back in '93, but was/is unscalloped. The Hybrid bracing system is scalloped, and DOES sound more open to begin with.

Martin used this technique for their famous vintage “Pre-war” guitars built prior to 1944. (From 1945-1976, Martin used “straight” top braces, and since ...

The Inevitability of Scalloped Bracing: Resistance is Futile

To your point about there being many non-scalloped bracing systems out there, yes. I don't mean to suggest that I think there's only one way to make a "good" guitar. I've owned a couple of non-scalloped Martin models (an old D-1, a D-15M). Past tense. Reason being, I just don't think they hold up very well against comparable lighter-braced dreads.
