Racers dabbled with nitrous oxide injection from time to time with varied results. It wasn't until the late 1970s when two racers perfected its use. The company Nitrous Oxide Systems (NOS) was born. Nitrous oxide engine - Wikipedia

A nitrous oxide engine, sometimes referred to as NOS, is an internal combustion engine in which oxygen for burning the fuel comes from the decomposition of nitrous oxide, N 2 O, rather than air. The system increases the engine's power output by allowing fuel to be burned at a higher-than-normal rate, because of the higher partial pressure of oxygen injected with the fuel mixture.

I drift with extremely high HP cars (350-750 HP range) using Racing Tires, and the only times I use NOS are when I'm racing, and to slightly increase the angle of a drift. I'm usually spending about 200,000-300,000 credits on my cars, so the extra 5,000 for NOS doesn't phase me.
