Construction of the giant Oklahoma State Fair Speedway was completed in 1954. The speedway became a sizeable part of fair-goers activities for over half a century. In 1961, late model stock car racing began on the half-mile oval track. That same year the State Fair Grandstand was chosen as a filming location for the musical Rodgers and Hammerstein.

The Fair Grounds speedway was just a little over a mile south of Taft. Some might remember the Indianapolis 500 driver from Oklahoma, Lloyd Ruby, started his successful racing career driving the oval at Taft, but didn’t drive at the new venue. The Fair Ground was also used as the racing oval in the movie State Fair staring Pat Boone.

"Big" John Deveny has fans called him. John raced at OKC and Ada in the 60's OKC Fairgrounds and Ada. He raced his 100th race in June 1968 at the OKC Fairgrounds. Some his season points were; 1965-2nd in points 1/4 mile, 1967-6th in points 1/4 mile, 1968-16th in points 1/4 mile. Big John has to be smiling down and saying dig in Terry and Nick.
