Today more boats continue to race in US Sailing area L under PHRF-NW than any other handicapping system in the Pacific Northwest. PHRF-NW for the last several decades has been an officially recognized handicapping system under PIYA for both United States and Canadian sailboat races conducted under PIYA Yacht Club sponsorship.

Several years ago many owners in the Puget Sound Big Boat Fleet took serious issue with changes in the PHRF-NW handicaps, and decided to institute the IRC rule at the top end of the fleet. This worked for a while, but not completely. In the meantime the ORC rule was taking root in Vancouver. In the end, the IRC fleet has embraced ORC.
