Here is a picture with the braces rough carved: Bracing_Small.jpg (81.97 KiB) Viewed 7523 times The Frets.com pictures make it very clear that I am substantially over braced. I am going to pull about 1/3 the height off of the x-braces, and thin the top down some. Currently it is around 2.9 - 3.2 mm, depending on where I measure it.

The top for the parlor guitar is approximately 2 mm. To do this, the piece was just sent through the drum sander for multiple passes until the desired thickness was reached. This is the oldest design in guitars. 200 years ago most guitars had a simple design called ladder bracing. It’s basically a guitar with struts glued in perpendicular to the soundboard. The grain was straight and oriented so that slices of the board would be essentially quarter sawn. The photo on the right shows the sliced up 2x4 put back together. To make sure I got enough good slices to build a full top, I used a 7-1/2", 1/6" kerf blade on the table saw to slice up the 2x4. I tried a number of orientations of the strips.
